Computers are
basically machines that have to be told what to do. Unfortunately, computers
don’t understand human language-they have their own languages. The term
computer language includes a wide variety of languages used to communicate with
computers.
Computer languages can be of
different types. There are high level languages, assembly languages, machine
languages, and fourth generation languages. High level languages such as BASIC,
COBOL, and FORTRAN are also known as programming languages.

Each language has its strength
and weaknesses. Some are good for processing numerical data, others are good
for creating readable programmes.
Machine language consist of only
numbers, while assembly languages allow a programme to substitute names for
numbers.
Fourth generation languages are
the most sophisticated, and are also the closest to human language.
